Financial Times Review
You know a product is going to be big when it's covered by the FT. And that's what's happened to the Pleo Robotic Dinosaur! Here are some excerpts of the article that we found most interesting:
“It’s like how Pixar makes its movies,” says Bob Christopher, chief executive and co-founder of Ugobe, referring to how its near neighbour in Emeryville, California can make an audience suspend disbelief and see human characteristics in its animations. “At some point, our technology has to be so good that you forget it is a robot."
The dinosaur’s birth is already long overdue. Its delivery was first planned for last autumn at a retail price of about $200. A year late and with costs mounting (see below), it is going on sale at $349.The report talked about how Caleb tried to bring a lifelike robot to the market with Matel but they just didn't grasp the concept and share Caleb's vision. So now, 20-odd years later the idea is just months away from being born.
There is so much history in this article that any true Pleo fan should read it. The only issue is that it's behind a subscription log-in page. But if you view the Google Cache of the page (they allow Google's spider to read it with no hindrance) you'll get all the information.
